I’m back with this month’s super awesome installment of knowledge. Sit back and enjoy as I learn you some stuff. This month we are going to dive into the traditional Chinese medicine called Wu Xing. In a nutshell, it basically means that everything in the human body is interconnected and that conditions of the body are a result of an energy imbalance. The reason for this is because the body is made of energy. Don’t believe me? Follow along here.
We know that everything, yes everything, literally, as literal as possible, is made from matter. Matter is made from energy. If you have taken elementary school biology we know that cells vibrate at different frequencies and the rate of vibration gives us the different states of matter, solid, gas, liquid, and plasma. Since our bodies are made of energy it would follow that for the body to operate at peak performance all of those different energies must be in balance. If they aren’t balanced then we are going to have issues and since everything is energy and is all interconnected problems can manifest in different places.
In Wu Xing, these energies in the body are represented by the five elements, earth, metal, water, wood, and fire. In energy medicine, esthetic conditions are believed to be the result of internal energy imbalances. Understanding the different elements and how they relate to each other and to your body shape and help tell where there is an imbalance. Manifestations of skin conditions relating to reflex zones gives an idea of the energy or energies that are not in balance. Meanwhile chronic or reoccurring skin conditional may demonstrate underlying issues with your overall health and wellness.
If your conditions seem to run on repeat every few weeks or months or they return after temporarily diminishing, they point to a systemic energy imbalance. Think of it as a telltale sign of the dominating elemental energy that’s affecting you. The dominating energy will determine the probably path for your specific aging. Understanding these reoccurring conditions and their underlying energy imbalances becomes important to those looking for a non-invasive, results driven treatment.
In traditional Chinese Medicine, and my own personal spa, our goal is to address not only the manifestation, but the underlying imbalance. I know I threw a lot at you there, but your big take away should be that the body is made of energy and that imbalances in that energy can be causing your skin problems.
Now that we have the basics let’s get to the fun stuff. How do we tell which element is our dominating energy and what could be some common problems if we are suffering from an imbalance?
The Earth Element is all about nurture on all levels and this includes the ability to foster yourself as well as others. When Earth is in balance, you transform your food into energy, immunity, warmth, and creativity. You take when life gives you, and are nurtured by it.
A healthy Earth element enables you to be sympathetic, strong, hardworking, helpful, diplomatic, practical, and creative. Earth types have family and friends as their focus in life.
Earth Organs: Stomach, Spleen, Pancreas
Signs of imbalance:
· Yellow, gold, or orange discoloration spots on your skin
· Facial irregularities around the mouth or eyes
· Fatigue weight and digestive issues
· Compulsion, worry, and obsessiveness
Supporting the Earth energy:
To support the Earth energy, engage in activities that are nurturing to you. Create a harmonious and relaxing home environment, and aim for eating three satisfying meals per day. Try and make them healthy and actually prepare them yourself. I mean that is the goal most of the time right. Oh, and as always live my mantra RELAX!!!
With a balanced and healthy metal energy, you consolidate and organize your activities, environment, and thoughts. As you value your own worth, you can hold to your principles. Healthy and lustrous skin and hair are signs your metal energy is in balance and healthy.
Metal Organs: Lungs, colon, and skin

Support the Metal energy:
Over scheduled, over worked, and over consumed seem to be the nature of the beast these days. Combined this lifestyle is a breeding ground for poor health. A well organized and relaxed life helps us to focus and be more productive with our time. Consider all the little extras that add up in the day and work on eliminating extraneous activities in order to lighten your work load and better balance and organize your life. I call it turning chaos into order and sometimes it takes as little as clearing and cleaning my work space. When I have somewhere that I can fully function, it helps to motivate me to put the rest of my life in order.
Our bodies are made up of 70% water so it should come as no surprise that the water energy can be considered our foundation. Energetically it stores all our vitality from birth to death. Water energy is the underlying force for our vitality, warmth, and bravery. A healthy Water energy creates an individual who has strong will power and creativity, but who is also gentle, calm, and handles stress well.
Organs: Kidney, Bladder, Adrenal Gland
Signs of imbalance:
· Dark blue, purple, grey, or black spots or splotches
· Facial irregularities under the eyes and around the chin
· Fatigue, reproductive issues, hearing, teeth, bone, or hair problems
· Fear, paranoia, insecurity, timidity
Support the Water Energy:
Two words here REST and RELAXATION are the key to nurturing your water energy. Take time to sit down or rest in nature. Meditation and martial arts are wonderful ways to recharge and rebalance your water energy. Just as water ebbs and flows focus on how your breathing and note how it mirrors the behavior of water. Short and chaotic breaths are akin to chaotic and turbulent waters, but when they are calm, thoughtful, and deep we can truly appreciate the beauty of water.
Wood expresses the power of growth and potential. It enables us to move forward with a clear vision and purpose with full determination. Individuals with a healthy wood energy are natural leaders with a calm demeanor and excellent judgement. They tend to draw people to them and have a natural energy to them regardless of what’s happening in the world around them.
Organs: Liver and Gall Bladder
Signs of Imbalance:
Green, yellow-green, blue-green, or brown spots
Facial irregularities around the brows, temples, or above the mouth
Issues with movement, allergies, lumps, headaches
Anger, impatience, rudeness, arrogance, frustration, wanderlust
Support the Wood Energy:
In a nutshell (haha get it nutshell, nuts come from trees, trees are wood... okay fine terrible joke moving on), you should be exercising daily. 80% of jobs in the industrialized world are desk jobs. This means that most likely you are spending the vast majority of your day on your behind staring at a screen. Take some time to get up and walk around during the day. If you have stairs at your office then take them instead of the elevator, get up and stretch at your desk or swap out your office chair for a ball. Side note my husband swapped out his chair for a ball for nearly 5 years while working in an office and he swore up, down, and sideways that it was the best decision he ever made. Oh; and follow the 20/20/20 rule to save your eyes. Every 20 minutes stare at something 20 ft. away for 20 seconds. I promise you it will save your eyes and you’ll be thanking me. You’re welcome.
Fire helps to regulate blood circulation, consciousness, sleep, and memory. This energy represents our relationship with ourselves and others. Much like the warmth of a fire is best shared among friends a healthy fire energy allows us to share love, warmth, intimacy, and a sense of oneness. People with a strong fire energy can often be seen laughing and enjoying themselves while surrounded by others. They have a natural ability to be struck by inspiration and a tenacity for creative thinking.
Organs: Heart, small intestines, circulatory system
Signs of Imbalance:
· Red, purple, or pale spots
· Facial irregularities around the nose bulb or inner part of the bottom lip
· Extremes of laughter either excessive or lack thereof
· Mania, rapid speech, anxiety, stuttering, nightmares, mental illness
Supporting the Fire Energy:
The heart is king and rules over the rest of the body. When the rest of the kingdom is healthy the heart is happy. Rarely is the fire energy the only energy out of balance. By bringing the rest of the body back into harmony the fire energy will heal and support itself.
I know I tossed a lot at you this month and there is so much more that we could go in to, but I will leave you with this for now. As we take the time to notice our own imbalances and take the necessary steps to bring our life back into harmony we will see drastic improvements in every aspect of our life. I wish you all the best, but I have things to do so get off my blog and get back to living your life.
